2023 Read #25
Shelf Indulgence Book Club October 2023I know you are not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but this cover was so lovely it pulled me right in. Unfortunately, I did not love the books as much as I loved the cover. I didn't hate it, but I felt like it walked too fine a line between being set in the "real" world and dabbling in a "magical world." It wasn't realistic enough to not be fantasy but it didn't feel like there wasn't enough magic/witchcraft. However, I still enjoyed the story and the 3 main female characters (but not their male foils, they were all awful). As others in my book club mentioned, I think I need a break from toxic male characters treating women horribly. Although I was very pleased with how Graham was there for Violet when she needed someone. It starkly contrasted the whiny Bryon who was not there for his sister Benny in our last book club selection (Black Cake).
