What I Read: May 2023 Edition

Books that I read with my eyes 👁️ and books I listened to with my ears👂🏻 during the month of May:

Old Babes in the Woods by Margaret Atwood

May 2nd 2023

👁️ Kindle Library Book ⭐️⭐️⭐️

A good collection of short stories. At least one I know I have read before, but I did enjoy most of them.

The Woman in the Library by Sulari Gentill

May 2nd 2023

👂🏻Audiobook ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Felt a little like a game of Clue. I enjoyed the local landmarks, but the ending did not please me.

The Many Daughters of Afong Moy

May 5th 2023

👂🏻Audiobook ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Couldn’t stop listening and trying to connect all the pieces. The science behind the plot of the story is very interesting.

Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

May 7th 2023

👁️ Fable e-book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

May’s Selection for my Fable Shelf Indulgence Book Club

I went into this book not really knowing what it was about, but several people had recommended it to me, so I decided to select it for our first book club read. I don't consider myself to be lacking in the vocabulary department, but I did find I was looking up a lot of definitions as I read. The use of uncommon words did not bother me though, I felt it lent a pretentious air to the characters in a way that was fitting for their personalities. I ended up really feeling for the characters and wanting them to succeed and be happy.

How to Stop Time by Matt Haig

May 10th 2023

👂🏻Audiobook ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“It's a sausage. A special sausage. A Dachshund sausage. A special little frankfurter. It's heaven in a bun. It's what all of civilization has been heading towards...If I'd have known, growing up in Flanders, that one day I would get to taste a hot dog. Well!”

Happy Place by Emily Henry

May 12th 2023

👁️ Fable e-book ⭐️⭐️

May’s Selection for the Fable Crow Club ♠️ Book Club

I don’t know… 2 stars? If I had listened to the audiobook on my commute at 2x speed I feel like it would have been a nice distraction from the traffic and I probably would have given in 3. Split the difference and go for 2.5 stars. It was fine but not really my jam. Also, I never want to read the phrase “cupid’s bow” ever again.

Bad Vibes Only (And Other Things I Bring to the Table) by Nora McInerny

May 12th 2023

👂🏻Audiobook ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Picked this one for the cover without realizing it was essays. I could definitely relate to some of them.

We Were Never Here by Andrea Bartz

May 15th 2023

👂🏻Audiobook ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Based on the reviews it seems like people either loved or hated this one. It felt a bit unbelievable to me.

The Maidens by Alex Michaelides

May 17th 2023

👂🏻Audiobook ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I didn’t not like it, but I was a little meh on it? Something about the way the author writes his female characters irks me in a way I can’t quite explain.

Book Lovers by Emily Henry

May 20th 2023

👂🏻Audiobook ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Cute story, I liked it better than Happy Place, but this just isn’t my favorite genre.

Four Treasures of the Sky

by Jenny Tinghui Zhang

May 24th 2023

👂🏻Audiobook ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Definitely a more adult read than the Shadow & Bones series, but held my interest.

Four Treasures of the Sky

by Jenny Tinghui Zhang

May 25th 2023

👁️ Fable e-book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

May’s Selection for the Fable Diversify & Amplify Book Club

This was an absolutely heartbreaking story.

Hell Bent (Alex Stern #2)

by Leigh Bardugo

May 28th 2023

👂🏻Audiobook ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I have to admit I am hooked on this series. It’s not going on my favorites list, but it’s everything I love in a good commuting book. Interesting plot, holds my attention, not so complex that I can’t follow the characters and plot while I am driving.
