What I Read: June 2023 Edition

Books that I read with my eyes 👁️ and books I listened to with my ears👂🏻 during the month of June:

One Day I Shall Astonish the World by Nina Stibbe

June 1st 2023

👂🏻Audiobook ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Quirky but the characters frustrated me with their choices many times.

Eight Hundred Grapes by Laura Dave

June 3rd 2023

👂🏻Audiobook ⭐️⭐️⭐️

A bit predictable but an enjoyable commute listen.

Quietly Hostile by Samanatha Irby

June 4th 2023

👁️ Kindle ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really enjoyed the other three books I read of hers so I preordered this one. Definitely still enjoyable and funny, but not my favorite out of the bunch.

The Night Watchman by Louise Erdrich

June 8th 2023

👂🏻Audiobook ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Put this on my holds list at the library after reading The Sentence by the same author. It did not disappoint. “But every so often the government remembered about Indians and when they did they always tried to solve Indians, thought Thomas. They solve us by getting rid of us.”

Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt

June 13th 2023

👁️ Fable e-book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

June’s Selection for my Shelf Indulgence Book Club

I love Marcellus McSquiddles. 🐙

When I read the description of this book I thought his character was going to actually talk to Tova and that put me off a bit. However, since everyone has been loving the book I decided to choose it for our June Book Club read. So glad I did as I ended up enjoying it very much!

The 23rd Midnight by James Patterson & Maxine Paetro

June 11th 2023

👂🏻Audiobook ⭐️⭐️

I have a hard time breaking up with a series once I start it. These are not great but I know the characters and they help to pass the time in traffic.

The Sanatorium by Sarah Pearse

June 17th 2023

👂🏻Audiobook ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Enjoyable gothic thriller. Had some issues with the who done it an why reveal, but I won’t give away the ending.

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros

June 17th 2023

👁️ Fable e-book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

June’s Selection for the Fable Crow Club ♠️ Book Club

Reads like YA but is definitely rated R. Was invested in seeing what was going to happen next, but instead of any of the main human characters the curmudgeonly dragon was my favorite.

Bookish People by Susan Coll

June 21st 2023

👂🏻Audiobook ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Cute but not riveting. (2.5 stars)

Wrong Place Wrong Time by Gillian McAllister

June 23rd 2023

👂🏻Audiobook ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I had a hard time getting into this one at first as I don’t generally enjoy time travel plots, but at some point, I got sucked in and wanted to know how things worked out. (3.5 stars)

None of This Would Have Happened if Prince Were Alive

June 30th 2023

👂🏻Audiobook ⭐️⭐️

The idea of the book was more interesting than the book itself. (2.5 stars)

Young Jane Young by Gabrielle Zevin

June 30th 2023

👁️ Kindle Library Book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“A man puts on a suit and a tie and an American flag pin, and that’s the end of the story. He is a politician. A female politician’s appearance is always a disputed territory, a matter of discussion.”
